Mud redeposition during river incision as a factor affecting authigenic <sup>10</sup>Be/<sup>9</sup>Be dating: Early Pleistocene large mammal fossil‐bearing site Nová Vieska, eastern Danube Basin

This study examines the suitability of authigenic 10Be/9Be dating method to deposits an incising river, taking as example Nová Vieska river terrace, which accumulated during neotectonic inversion Danube Basin (western Slovakia). The succession was formed by a wandering with minor preservation proximal floodplain muds. frequent occurrence mud intraclasts reflects significant input eroded material from underlying, older successions. ages 13 samples three groups: (1) below base terrace yielded dates ~4.13–3.70 Ma (including uncertainties); (2) muddy gave age range ~2.79–1.96 Ma; and (3) in situ layers had ~1.91–1.39 Ma. large mammal fossil assemblage channel thalweg biostratigraphic ~3.6–2.2 Ma, matching intraclasts, thus emphasising redeposited origin those fossils. relatively wide is interpreted result redeposition strata on scales: decimetre-scale millimetre-scale rip-up clasts mixed into newly beds, formation two rims different records around individual particles. Considering these observations, proposed depositional most probable falling within recent part this interval. effect shown be potentially limiting application rivers, stands marked contrast aggrading settings, where sediments limited degree variability low.
